Teacher Event
The Bird City Public Library was awarded a Cheyenne County Hansen Community Grant of $2,686.93 in 2018.
The Cheylin school system has outdated materials in their library. They do not have funding to update or replace materials. They don’t have funding to staff a full time School Librarian. The Bird City Public Library has access to a vast system of digital materials that can be used by patrons for not cost. The Public Library also has access to an interlibrary loan system with all other libraries in the State of Kansas, that can allow for borrowing materials that teachers often use in the classroom, at no cost to the teachers. With limited school hours, teachers don’t often have the time to schedule in training or assisting students with learning new research options online. Teachers also often don’t have time to research for the materials or resources they need, the Public Librarian can help with this. The Public Librarian is trained in the majority of these online tools, however can only educate the public to their availability when the need arises. By combining our efforts, the students get more access to newer materials, online research options, and learn of better study options while at the same time the Public Library can increase its serviceability to the community and reach more community members by helping their children through the school.
